Research Trip

A trip to Angoustrine.

Angoustrine

Our MDEF research journey brought us to the picturesque town of Angoustríne, tucked away in the French Pyrenees, just a couple of hours' drive from Barcelona or a scenic three-hour train ride. During our stay, we found comfort in the rustic charm of La Grande Maison Rouge, an old farmhouse lovingly curated by Mercè and her family. They reside in Angoustríne and have dedicated themselves to converting the house into a retreat for all kinds of research and experimentation.

Each day was structured around various activities. Upon our arrival, we were acquainted with our additional research supervisor, Thomas Duggan. Throughout our time there, we were strongly encouraged to explore a wide array of mediums and technologies that typically wouldn't be within our reach during our usual work routines. This included experimenting with analogue photography techniques such as pinhole cameras and photosensitive paper, as well as delving into the realm of film. Additionally, we had the opportunity to utilize microscopy and macro lenses for smartphones, allowing us to examine the intricacies of the microscopic world up close.

Taking Inspiration from Nature

I took some microscopic images of nature and patterns in the nature to then recreate them from clay. I had worked with clay before and had lost touch as I moved around a lot and started university. This time was a perfect opportunity for me to re-ignite my love for clay and work with it. It felt very intimate and relaxing and I was able to get my hands dirty to create some clay pieces.

The research trip was a fun experience for the whole class to bond and co-live together as a group. The house we stayed at was amazing and had great facilities. I am grateful for the trip and for having spent time with the classmates and for being given the opportunity to create some work with clay.
