Smart Citizen Kit

The Smart Citizen Kit sensor is a component of the Smart Citizen project, which aims to empower citizens to monitor and understand their environment better. The sensor is a small electronic device equipped with various sensors that can measure environmental parameters like air quality, temperature, humidity, noise levels, and more. These sensors collect real-time data from the environment and transmit it to a central database or platform where it can be analyzed and visualized. This data can provide valuable insights into local environmental conditions, such as pollution levels or temperature variations, which can be used by individuals, communities, or policymakers to make informed decisions about their surroundings.

1. Air Quality Sensor: Measures the concentration of pollutants such as particulate matter (PM), carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and ozone (O3) in the air.
2. Temperature Sensor: Monitors the ambient temperature of the environment.
3. Humidity Sensor: Measures the relative humidity in the air.
4. Noise Sensor: Detects the level of ambient noise or sound intensity.
5. Light Sensor: Measures the intensity of light in the environment.
6. Connectivity Module: Enables the sensor to transmit data wirelessly to a central server or platform.
7. Power Source: Typically powered by batteries or through a USB connection.

By deploying these sensors across different locations in a city or community, users can create a network of real-time environmental monitoring stations. This network approach allows for comprehensive coverage of environmental conditions, enabling better understanding and management of urban environments.

We wanted to see how the city noise affects the natural beach sounds. We used the SCK to measure the sound levels of the beach from different distances using the GPS tracker. We realized that the beach wave sounds are only audible from about 100 meters and the city noise sounds are much louder, unfortunately.

Reflection

Participating in the project utilizing the Smart Citizen Kit (SCK) to analyze sound waves at the beach proved to be an enlightening experience. Initially, our team encountered challenges, notably technical difficulties with the SCK on the first day. Despite these setbacks, we persevered, and eventually managed to collect valuable data on the impact of city noises on the beach environment.

One of the most striking revelations was the stark difference in the audibility of beach sounds compared to the overpowering presence of city noises. It was surprising to observe how urban sounds dominated the acoustic landscape, potentially masking the natural sounds of the beach environment. This realization underscored the profound influence of human activity on natural habitats and highlighted the importance of initiatives aimed at preserving and restoring ecological balance.

Navigating through the process of data collection and analysis presented its own set of challenges. From troubleshooting technical issues to interpreting and visualizing the gathered data, each step required patience and problem-solving skills. However, overcoming these obstacles proved to be a valuable learning experience. I gained a deeper understanding of how to effectively utilize the SCK, as well as honed my skills in data interpretation and visualization.

Beyond the technical aspects, this project provided valuable insights into the intricate relationship between urbanization and environmental degradation. It served as a reminder of the need for sustainable practices and mindful urban planning to mitigate the adverse effects of city noises on natural ecosystems.

Overall, this module was an enriching and educational journey. It not only deepened my knowledge of environmental monitoring tools but also instilled a greater appreciation for the delicate balance between human activities and the natural world. Moving forward, I am inspired to continue exploring ways to contribute to the preservation and protection of our planet's diverse ecosystems.
